The “Project Runway” stunner’s suit also includes the first cover girl Babette March and Elle Macpherson, and it was all designed by Lisa Cabrinha.
In a new interview, the co-owner of Letarte Swimwear explained, “When I heard it was going to be the 50th anniversary, I wanted to come up with something really unique. I thought, the covers are what make every issue so important. I laid it out first on the computer, and I had to figure out how I could print the fabric. I knew if I printed in the U.S. it would get leaked. So I actually sent it to Portugal to a small printing company over there.”
And Lisa kept it a secret from literally everybody involved- “I wanted to surprise the girls at Sports Illustrated so I sent them the suit [without any notice]. They had no idea!”
Additionally, Cabrinha put together a one-piece that included all 50 covers. “I live in Hawaii, and all the guys I know are like ‘Can you make us some board shorts out of that fabric?’ But they won’t be sold. They were only for the anniversary.”
Meanwhile, Heidi is thrilled about the attire- “I can’t even tell you how excited I am that I get to wear the suit with all the beautiful covers that Sports Illustrated has ever done. I love it. I’ve done Sports Illustrated so many times and I’ve traveled the world. That I get to do this issue is pretty special.”
